A new course for public communicators on social media is launched to contribute to the fight against misinformation and to support an open and inclusive, democratic debate.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"There can be little doubt that fighting misinformation is important. It is equally vital to support a free and open public debate. It can be a difficult balancing act for public communicators, because social media often favors those who shout the loudest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These words come from Katrine Thielke, a volunteer of ProPublica. She is facilitating a new course for public communicators working with social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The course will take place this autumn. It is the first in a series of courses that will be developed to strengthen democracy through better public communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"In our view, it is a joint task to ensure that we defend and develop our democracy and the open, free and democratic debate. The authorities have millions of followers on social media and are in dialogue with even more than that. Therefore the authorities have an important task to undertake,\" says Katrine Thielke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many without a strategy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of 2021, the OECD published a report on public communication<\/a>, which, among other things, concerned public authorities' efforts in relation to misinformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report concluded that less than half of the authorities in the 46 countries included in the study had strategies to counter misinformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
