The communication from democracy’s representatives in the public sphere, including e.g. ministers and authorities, play a decisive role for democratic culture.

ProPublica was established in June 2022 and is Europe's first NGO that works to strengthen democracy through better public communication. Now ProPublica has its first strategy.

Overall, the goal is to work for an honest democracy in the 21st century. In the coming years, ProPublica will work within four main areas:

1. A stronger informed democracy

2. Easier access to the democratic debate

3. New communication technology must benefit everyone

4. More people must take part in democracy

“Public communicators must not only act as good examples and support an informed debate with room for different points of view. They must also help strengthen citizens' skills in the information society in general.”

Democracies on retreat, mistrust and misinformation

ProPublica's strategy comes at a time when the democratic conversation and democracy itself is under pressure.

Only four out of ten citizens trust their government, for example, according to a new report from the OECD. In a recent survey from the US , nine out of ten journalists and eight out of ten citizens believe that fake news is a significant problem.

In general, democracy is in retreat worldwide, according to, among others, the research project Variables for Democracy and the think tank Freedom House.
